I believe more photographers should be running their own photo newsletters. I’ve talked about why, and recommended email services to get started. To round out these resources I’ve gathered a list of photo newsletters happening around the web for you to subscribe to. Support the photographers below and get inspired to start your own photo newsletter.
Photo newsletters you should subscribe to
Craig Mod — Craig is a writer, photographer, and walker based in Japan. He runs a couple newsletters full-time along with a slew of other projects.
- Roden: Monthly — photography × literature × tech × film
- Ridgeline: Weekly — walking × Japan (photography always a presence)
- Craig also runs limited time photo newsletters every so often including huh and TOKIO TŌKYŌ TOKYO. He promotes these through his main newsletters.
Process by Wesley Verhoeve — Photographer and curator Wesley Verhoeve shares a weekly newsletter about photography and finding your voice inspired by his own experience as a professional photographer. I’d say this is likely the best photo-focused newsletter going today.
FlakPhoto Digest — “A curated mix of photography news, online ephemera, recommended reading, and plenty of pictures,” from Andy Adams.
Feature Shoot — Bringing you photography insights, opportunities, news and inspiration since 2008. In addition to running daily posts about new and ongoing photographic series, Feature Shoot also runs exclusive interviews with artists, themed group shows, opportunities for photographers and reviews of current exhibitions.
Gregory Crewdson Trail Log — Crewdson, known for his elaborate small town American scenes, shares production notes, inspiration, and thoughts on creativity in his “Trail Log.” “The trail is wherever my day leads, wherever my mind wanders, past, present, future, or fiction. So, you’ll get an inside view into shooting pictures here. But you’ll also spend time with me in nature, on travels, with friends, and alone. It’s all one thing.”
Recollect by Zach Leon — “Recollect is a monthly newsletter for creative endeavors, art enjoyed, and the general state of life abroad,” produced by Zach Leon, whose travels, book recommendations, and of course photos from his nomadic life abroad are sure to inspire.
Cole Thompson — Cole is a fine art photographer who specializes in black & white work. His newsletter, while intermittent, shares quotes on the creative process, new work, and thoughts on the photographic life.
Interloper by Alice Zoo — The London-based photographer and writer shared essays and interviews with other photographers.
Notes from the Lab by Roman Haindl — A bi-weekly newsletter exploring the creative process, the rituals and the thinking behind being a photographer and filmmaker.
Yet Another Memory by Behzod — An image and some words — every weekday.
Stillnotes by Alex Eaton (Disclaimer: This is mine) — A weekly photography newsletter sharing one image and the story behind it. One week you might get an adventure story of how a photo was made, another a technical how-to, or maybe the meaning behind the image.
